Hip 107: Black Star by Vassilios Sofianidis

Pencil - 47" x 35"
Notes:

Vassilios was born in Vamvakousa, a small rural village near the Strymónas River in northern Greece. In addition to serving in the army as an officer, he studied free-linear drawing and Byzantine painting with three renowned Greek painters and architects: Christoforos Mellidis (who won the Academy of Athens award twice), Evagelos Kokolios and George Moutsatsos. He is also a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece.

Vassilios' art is a tribute to the spirit of the horse, and through it he hopes to make people see the horse's natural beauty and bridge the divide between humans and horses brought about by centuries of civilization. The horse teaches us about authenticity, honesty and the fact that a true relationship is based on cooperation and not domination; they show us that we can maintain our spirit and passion while remaining sensitive and sympathetic.

Vassilios also believes many animals are characterized by commitment and companionship to humans, but only the horse is what has influenced the shaping of world history.

Vassilios draws with pencils on paperboard (Bristol 300gr). Although it is very time consuming, this medium allows him to capture all the details, textures and depth of his subjects.
