Hip 182: Windswept by Samantha Sherry

Oil on wood - 14.5" x 32.5"
Notes:

Samantha spent much of her childhood on horseback. She competed nationally in barrel racing events and was a member of her university rodeo team. While a freshman in college, she took her first art class and quickly decided to pursue a degree in art. After graduating with a BFA in Studio Art, she was accepted into the Master of Fine Art program at the Memphis College of Art. She followed her MFA degree with a second Masters (MAT), also from MCA.

“Horses have always been my point of entry into the world, a way of framing, questioning, understanding, connecting and commemorating,” Samantha explains. Her work examines the relationships between memory, family, and identity. Within her artistic output, the horse is symbolic and provides the distance and vocabulary necessary for her to explore deeply personal issues and motifs.

Despite variations in style and media, the work is unified by theme and subject. The lines and layers facilitate exploration between the simultaneous fragmentation and connection of ideas and images.

Samantha is a full-time artist living in Tennessee with her husband, three dogs, and a six-year-old Quarter Horse, Sunfire-N-Frost (aka Sonny) she bred, raised, and trained. She exhibits her work nationally at museums and galleries, most recently as part of the Cowgirl Up! exhibition, Mountain Oyster Contemporary Art Show & Sale, The Western Spirit Art Show, and America's Horse in Art.
